Hey Designers, Oykun here

I began my career as a self-taught full-stack developer and designer in the 90s. Eventually, I chose to fully focus on design.

Over the past 25+ years, I've gone from freelancing and running my own agency to taking the role of Senior Vice President of Design, Manager, and Creative Lead for multiple business lines including Global A.I. & Data Solutions in the world's largest and richest Tier 1 Investment Bank, generating multiple billions of dollars annually.

I worked in any environment you can imagine, as a Designer. I interviewed and mentored hundreds of designers at all levels, from juniors to seniors.

I received job offers from companies including Meta, Google, Apple, and more… Multiple times.

Now, I'm sharing all my experiences in this affordable resource without any fluff!

Introduction

Most designers confuse the skillset required to do the job with those needed to land one. They often assume that an amazing portfolio alone is enough to secure any job in the market. However, the harsh reality often proves different when they start applying. It doesn't make sense to them that a polished "design" portfolio doesn't guarantee a "design" job.

I wish it was that simple, and frankly it was a few years back for most companies however expectations are different in today’s market where there are too many designers for too few jobs.

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that the portfolio is not important. It is crucial! However, your portfolio will only get you so far. It covers the first step in your journey to landing a job which is inspiring the hiring managers, making them dream about what you can do for their product solutions, making them curious to understand how you designed those amazing projects and what your process was like. It will make them say, "OK! Let's talk to this designer. I see good and relevant stuff here."

You should not undervalue the portfolio, it is an un negotiable asset. I just don’t want you to stop there like most designers do and mess up in interview process or even getting response to their emails.

Before we go any further, I need you acknowledge that getting a job is not a guaranteed Yes or No situation.

If you drop a ball from a building, you know it will fall. It is a guaranteed situation. If you do A, B will happen. But with jobs, it doesn’t always work that way.

When you apply for a job, even if you do everything right, you may still not secure the position, mostly due to the human factor. Humans are unpredictable, after all.

Landing a job is, at best, a probability and we have some level of control over increasing it.

Your portfolio is just one factor among many in this probability formula. If you give your 110% focus, time, and energy to perfecting it and ignore everything else like most designers do, you will only lower your probability of getting the job.

Here we will dive deep into the preparations you need to do before even looking for a job, how to improve your portfolio and start attracting your dream companies with it. Then, we will cover how you can ace your interview an until your very first day in your new job and gain confidence, skills, connection to thrive in the design world along the way with no fluff!

We have a lot to cover, let’s begin!
